President Murmu Says Not A Single Educational Institution In India Is In The Top 50

On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu underscored the imperative to address the absence of Indian educational institutions from top global rankings. Expressing concern, she noted that while India boasts the world’s oldest knowledge tradition, not a single institute ranks among the top 50. Speaking at the 69th convocation of IIT Kharagpur, Murmu emphasized the importance of quality education over rankings. She acknowledged that high rankings not only attract students and faculty but also enhance the country’s global reputation.

President Murmu called upon IIT Kharagpur, the country’s oldest IIT, to take proactive measures in this regard. Murmu highlighted IIT Kharagpur’s efforts in forming alliances with global establishments, viewing it as a significant step toward garnering international recognition for the Indian education system.

Emphasizing the right to technology, President Murmu asserted that technology should be utilized to promote social justice and equality. She underscored the belief that everyone should have access to technology, with its use aimed at reducing societal disparities. Murmu cited digital payment systems as an example, illustrating how technology has simplified life and benefited small consumers.

President Murmu lauded the global reputation of IITs, considering them as incubation centers for knowledge and technology. She praised IIT Kharagpur for its contributions over its 73-year journey and its role in nurturing exceptional talent. Murmu noted that India is reaching new heights and becoming a major global force, with IITs playing a crucial role in shaping the country’s educational landscape.

Highlighting the significance of women in science and technology, Murmu mentioned that 21% of the degree recipients at the convocation were women, encouraging more women to pursue studies in these fields. Director VK Tewari expressed optimism, stating that by 2030, IIT Kharagpur aims to be among the top 10 educational institutions globally.
