Stringent Investigation Amid Telangana Assembly Polls

In response to the assembly polls in Telangana, the police intensified their investigation. Since the commencement of the model code of conduct on October 9, continuous vehicle checks have been conducted. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines for assembly polls, transporting cash is deemed an offense and falls outside the bounds of legal activities.

The ECI, in its directives for assembly elections in five states, emphasized that candidates and parties must refrain from engaging in corrupt practices and offenses such as voter intimidation, bribery, voter impersonation, canvassing within 100 meters of polling stations, holding public meetings within 48 hours of the poll’s close, and conveying voters to and from polling stations.

Seizures Totaling Rs 1,760 Crore in Poll-Bound States

The Election Commission reported on Monday that over Rs 1,760 crore worth of freebies, tablets, cash, liquor, and precious metals intended to influence voters in five poll-bound states had been seized. This substantial figure, accumulated since the polls commenced on October 9, surpasses the seizures made during the previous assembly elections in 2018 in these states by over seven times (Rs 239.15 crore).

While assembly polls have concluded in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana are set to vote on November 25 and November 30, respectively. According to the Election Commission, seizures exceeding Rs 1,400 crore were made during the last six state assembly elections in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Karnataka. This marks an eleven-fold increase in seizures compared to previous assembly elections in these states.
