Subnautica 2 Developers Promise: No Season Passes, No Battle Passes

South Korean game developer Krafton initially hinted that Subnautica 2 would adopt a multiplayer-focused live service approach, causing confusion among fans. However, developer Unknown Worlds later clarified that the game is not primarily multiplayer-focused.

In Krafton’s financial report, Subnautica 2 was referred to as a “multiplayer sequel to the original IP pursuing fandom snowballing.” Nonetheless, they have since clarified that while the game will feature co-op multiplayer, it will not be the central focus..

Krafton also stated that Subnautica 2 will share similarities with the early access period of previous games in the series. Contrary to earlier concerns, there will be no inclusion of battle passes or subscriptions. Instead, the game will be built on the games-as-a-service model, allowing for continuous updates and content additions without requiring additional purchases.

In reference to “Games-as-a-Service,” we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription.

The upcoming Subnautica 2 will mark the third installment in the series developed by Unknown Worlds. The original game debuted in 2018, followed by its sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero.

In response to fans’ dissatisfaction and their desire for a solo, self-contained experience akin to previous Subnautica titles, Unknown Worlds swiftly addressed concerns. The developer emphasized through a blog post that Subnautica 2 would not be a multiplayer game, reassuring fans about the game’s single-player focus.

The game is not multiplayer-focused. Co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game. You’ll be able to enjoy the game as a single-player.

Following the earlier confusion, Unknown Worlds responded with a comprehensive and clear statement regarding the features of Subnautica 2. Additionally, they disclosed that the game is not slated for release in 2024, with further details to be unveiled later this year.
