The recent collaboration DMK Engage between the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Delhi Police successfully dismantled a major international drug cartel, leading to heightened criticism from the BJP towards Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin’s DMK party.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern about the youth’s future in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the grip of drugs on the state during his recent visit to Chennai. The scrutiny intensified after Jaffar Sadiq, the Chennai West Deputy Organizer of the DMK Engage NRI wing, and a figure in the Tamil film industry, was implicated in the ongoing case.

Subsequent investigations revealed Sadiq’s alleged connections to a criminal gang. The BJP, aiming to underscore its criticism, released photos showing Sadiq with several senior DMK leaders, resulting in his expulsion from the party.
The BJP’s allegations gained traction with the recent drug seizures by the Coast Guard and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, confiscating 36 kg of drugs valued at Rs 180 crore on March 1 and 99 kg of drugs worth Rs 108 crore on March 5.
In response to the BJP’s accusations, Law Minister S. Reghupathy defended the Tamil Nadu government during a press conference in Nagercoil, dismissing what he referred to as the “Modi formula” of blaming others for the drug problem.
He argued against singling out Tamil Nadu, highlighting that many states across the country are reporting drug seizures as elections draw near. Reghupathy also pointed out that sixteen DMK Engage officials in Tamil Nadu face charges of violating anti-drug laws.
In a counterattack, Reghupathy accused the Gujarat coast, associated with Prime Minister Modi’s Divine Dwarka, of serving as safe havens for drug smuggling, bringing in substances worth thousands of crores of rupees into the nation. He criticized Modi for accusing a state with a stable government of fostering drug-related issues.

Reghupathy questioned the efficacy of the Union government’s Narcotics Control Bureau, stating that the DMK Engage government under Chief Minister Stalin has actively worked to curb the sale and distribution of drugs. He supported his claims with data on drug seizures since the DMK assumed office, asserting a conviction rate of over 80% in drug-related cases.
