In the Spotlight: Top Takeaways from Delhi Budget 2024

Atishi, the Finance Minister of the Delhi Budget 2024 government, presented the budget for the fiscal year 2024–25 in the state assembly on Monday, with a total expenditure of Rs 76,000 crore.

During her budget speech, she introduced several initiatives aimed at the welfare of Delhi’s citizens. This marked Atishi’s first budget display as Finance Minister since joining the cabinet in March of the previous year.

Kailash Gahlot, following the previous Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case, presented the budget. The Delhi assembly’s budget session, which began on February 15, has been extended until March 8.

Key allocations in the budget include Rs 16,396 crore for the education sector,

Rs 8,685 crore for the health sector,

Rs 500 crore for Delhi Metro, and

Rs 510 crore for e-buses.

Under the Mukhya Mantri initiative, the Delhi Budget 2024 government plans to provide Rs 1000 per month to all women aged eighteen and above. Additionally, Rs 902 crore has been earmarked for the construction of unauthorized colonies in the capital.

Atishi mentioned during the presentation that by 2025, Delhi aims to have over 10,000 public transportation buses, with 80% of them being e-buses. The Kejriwal government allocated Rs 15 crore to implement the Business Blaster scheme in universities and ITIs.

The budget also includes Rs 40 crore for the Students’ Startup Business Blasters program, and Rs 15 crore for the Blaster Senior program, set to be introduced in government-funded universities in Delhi.

During her address, Finance Minister Atishi highlighted a Rs 16,396 crore allotment for education. The budget also includes Rs 664 crore for nutrition-related initiatives. Atishi emphasized the goal of achieving a state akin to Ram Rajya, where no one in Delhi goes hungry. This involves providing daily nutrient-rich hot meals to 1,80,000 children aged three to six, supplementing the diets of 3,40,000 children up to the age of three, and offering dietary supplements to 1,20,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The Delhi Budget 2024 government’s Mukhyamantri Teerth Yatra Yojana, which arranges free pilgrimages for the elderly to fifteen locations across religious faiths, received a budgetary proposal of Rs 80 crore for the fiscal year 2024–25, as unveiled on Monday.
