Why was British author Nitasha Kaul not allowed to enter India?

In response to Nitasha Kaul’s assertion of being turned away at the airport, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the decision to grant entry to a foreign national is a sovereign matter. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified on Thursday why UK writer Nitasha Kaul was denied entry.

Kaul, currently residing in the UK and originally from Kashmir, took to Twitter to share her experience, attributing the decision to her past articles critical of the RSS, claiming the order originated in New Delhi. BJP leaders labeled her a “known terrorist sympathizer” spreading anti-India propaganda.

She was barred from entering India despite being invited as a delegate to a conference in Karnataka by the Congress-led state government. Kaul, with a valid UK passport and OCI, was denied entry, allegedly due to her speech on constitutional and democratic values.

The incident triggered a verbal spat between the Congress and BJP, with Karnataka VHP leader Girish Bharadwaj urging the revocation of Kaul’s OCI card. Bharadwaj accused her of having ill intentions against the nation and called on the Union government to instruct states against inviting her.

On February 22, Nitasha Kaul arrived in India, claiming the threats from the right-wing milieu upon her deportation.

She refuted various accusations, asserting her identity as a thinking woman and denied affiliations with religion, political ideologies, or foreign entities. Karnataka ministers argued that the incident highlighted the BJP infringing on state government rights, emphasizing Karnataka’s prerogative to host professionals and organize events contributing to the state’s growth and national interest.
