Early Life and Challenges of Ummul Kher
Ummul’s journey began in the makeshift homes of Delhi’s slums, where she faced the challenges of her unprecedented bone disease. Living in adverse conditions, she persisted in her pursuit of knowledge, going against societal norms to seek education from various sources.

Facing financial strain due to her medical condition and family’s income limitations, Ummul’s thirst for knowledge was relentless. She broke societal norms and earned money at a young age to cover her educational expenses. Supported by an NGO, she completed her Class 10.

Despite her family’s reluctance to support her education after the 10th grade, Ummul left home, lived in a slum, resumed tutoring, and completed her Class 12 with an outstanding 91% score. She went on to graduate from Gargi College under Delhi University. Pursuing her MA at JNU’s School of International Studies, she was later accepted into the MPhil/PhD program at the same institution. Concurrently, she began her UPSC preparation and secured an impressive AIR-420, achieving her dream of becoming an IAS officer.
Ummul Kher faced the additional challenge of a rare bone disease throughout her life, enduring 16 fractures and 8 surgeries.
