The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted flight tests of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile from the Integrated Test Range off Odisha’s Chandipur on February 28 and 29.
VSHORADS- A short-range defense system
The defense ministry reported that these tests involved high-speed unmanned aerial targets in diverse interception scenarios. Throughout the two-day mission, all targeted objectives were intercepted and destroyed by the missiles, meeting the mission objectives.

VSHORADS, identified as a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD), serves as a short-range defense system designed to engage high-speed unmanned aerial targets in varied interception conditions. The missile is propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor, effectively neutralizing low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges.
DRDO conducts the flight tests of VSHORADS
Developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners, VSHORADS integrates innovative techniques with a Reaction Control System. The missile’s design, including the launcher, prioritizes optimal portability.

The flight tests were observed by officials from the Indian Army, senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, and industry partners. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, the Army, and the involved industries for the successful development trials of VSHORADS. Secretary DD R&D and Chairman DRDO, V Kamat, also extended congratulations to the entire team involved in the design and development of the missile.
