Shafiqur Rahman Barq, the Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party, passed away today at the age of 94, marking a somber moment for all. He had been battling a prolonged illness and took his last breath at Moradabad Private Hospital.

Known as the oldest MP in Parliament, Barq’s demise was announced by the Samajwadi Party on X, expressing deep sadness and offering heartfelt condolences to his family. The party acknowledged his significant contributions as a senior leader and five-time MP.

Who was Shafiqur Rahman Bark

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, born in Deepa Sarai, Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, had a close association with Mulayam Singh Yadav. He won his first Lok Sabha election in 1996 and held a B.A. degree from Agra University.

Notably, in 1986, he initiated a movement that led to his imprisonment under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act in Moradabad District Jail. Barq was actively involved in various committees, including the Babri Masjid Action Committee and the Haj Committee of India. He also served as the Chairman and Founder Trustee of BARQ Education and Science Trust.

What SP Chief said about Barq’s death?

The SP Chief, Akhilesh Yadav, expressed condolences and described Barq’s death as an immense loss. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously commended Barq’s dedication to the House during a parliamentary session despite his advanced age.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, a five-time MP and four-time MLA, was a founding member of the Samajwadi Party. He represented the Moradabad Lok Sabha seat in 1996, 1998, and 2004, and later the Sambhal Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and 2019.

Barq had also served as an MLA for four terms from Sambhal and held ministerial positions in the Uttar Pradesh government. Recognized for advocating the rights of the Muslim community, he began his political journey with Chaudhary Charan Singh and played a crucial role in the Babri Masjid Action Committee.
