During the second day of the Bundelkhand Gaurav Mahotsav in Chitrakoot, a tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon. An explosion occurred in the firecracker display area, resulting in the immediate death of two teenagers, while two others sustained grave injuries and later succumbed to them. All the victims were aged between 13 and 18, according to information provided by senior police and administrative officials.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath swiftly initiated a high-level inquiry, appointing a committee led by an additional director general (ADG) to investigate the incident. Expressing condolences, the Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 5,000 for the families of the deceased and an equal amount for the injured. Pankaj Jaat, Harsh Kamdar, and their associates, who own an entertainment company, are now facing formal complaints, with charges under IPC section 304 for culpable homicide.

Bhanu Bhaskar, the Additional Director General (ADG) for the Kanpur Zone, has taken charge of the investigation. The committee aims to conclude its inquiry within three days, after which the findings will be presented to the state government.

According to Arun Kumar Singh, the superintendent of police (SP) for Chitrakoot, the tragic incident unfolded at the Mahotsav grounds owned by the Chitrakoot Inter College. The planned green cracker display, scheduled for the evening, went awry as the explosion occurred during the setup in a special device behind the stage. The force of the blast was so intense that human body parts were found on the terrace of a nearby two-story school building and scattered up to 100 meters from the blast site.

A local police officer reported that the blast, heard kilometers away, took place at 3:10 PM. A rapid response team, Gaurav Mahotsav including a bomb disposal squad and senior officials like Ajay Kumar Singh and Chitrakoot DM Abhishek Anand, rushed to the scene to evacuate the injured. Initial reports confirmed two immediate fatalities, and two others were seriously injured. The area was cordoned off by forensic and police teams, diligently working to determine the cause of the tragic explosion.
