Prime Minister Modi played a crucial role in the successful release of eight Indian Navy veteran who were detained in Qatar on espionage charges. The Gujarat Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, praised the Centre’s efforts, calling it a significant achievement for the government.

8 Navy Veterans in Qatar Custody 

The veterans, including Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, and Sailor Ragesh, were released after their death sentence was commuted due to diplomatic intervention by New Delhi.

The Gujarat Chief Minister attributed the success to PM Modi’s robust global leadership and India’s friendly relations with other nations under his guidance. The Ministry of External Affairs assured the families of the Navy veterans that all diplomatic channels would be mobilized, and legal assistance would be provided to secure their safe return.

What PM Modi says

Reports indicated that the Qatar court had initially sentenced the veterans to death on charges related to allegedly spying on a submarine program. However, after diplomatic efforts and appeals, the death penalty was commuted, leading to their release.

PM Modi’s meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai played a crucial role in addressing the issue. The discussions focused on partnerships and the well-being of Indians in Qatar.

Upon their return to India, the veterans expressed gratitude to PM Modi for his personal intervention, emphasizing that their release would not have been possible without his efforts. The veterans, visibly relieved, chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ as they walked out of the Delhi airport.

One of the Navy veterans acknowledged that their safe return to India was a direct result of PM Modi’s involvement and expressed sincere thanks to both the Indian and Qatari governments for resolving the alleged spying case .
