In the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Ashok Chavan, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a prominent Congress member, dealt a significant blow to the opposition alliance INDIA bloc by announcing his resignation from the party. This move follows the recent departures of other influential Maharashtra Congress members, including Baba Siddique and Milind Deora.

Chavan formally submitted his resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party on December 2, 2024, in a brief letter to Nana Patole, the head of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. Ashok Chavan Simultaneously, he emailed his resignation as an MLA to the speaker. In a statement to reporters, the 65-year-old leader expressed his decision to step down from all positions within the Congress Party, stating that he would decide on his future course of action in the coming days. After a lifelong association with the Congress, Chavan mentioned his interest in exploring other opportunities.
Sources suggest that the BJP may offer Chavan a seat in the Rajya Sabha, and there are indications that several MLAs are in contact with him, considering a switch to the BJP. Reacting to the situation, BJP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged observers to wait and see Chavan’s next move, acknowledging the fluidity of the political landscape.
Amid rumors surrounding Chavan’s departure, Fadnavis commented on the Congress leadership, noting that some prominent leaders with connections to the people are feeling stifled within the party. He hinted at the possibility of more known faces joining the BJP in the future, stating, “Aagge aagge dekho hota haii kyaa” (wait and see what will happen in the coming days).
Ashok Chavan, once a significant figure in the Congress Party, served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from December 2008 to November 2010 but resigned due to suspected involvement in the Mumbai Adarsh housing scam. Following his resignation, some of Chavan’s supporters also left the party, including Amarnath Rajukar and Jagdish Amin, who joined the BJP.
In response to Chavan’s exit, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh commented on those leaving the party, calling them betrayers who may not realize the new opportunities available to them outside. Ramesh expressed the pain of seeing friends and colleagues depart from a party that has given them much, emphasizing the allure of personal opportunities over ideological commitment or allegiance to the party.
