Who is Uddhav Sena member Abhishek Ghosalkar?

On Thursday night in Mumbai, Mauris Noronha, a local “social activist,” fatally shot Abhishek Ghosalkar, a member of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), during a Facebook Live broadcast, as reported by the police. The incident took place at Mauris Noronha’s office in IC Colony, a northern suburb of Borivali (West), and the video quickly went viral. This unsettling event occurred shortly after CCTV footage emerged of a BJP MLA discharging a firearm inside a Thane district police station, raising concerns about the state of law and order in Maharashtra.

The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken charge of the investigation into the death of Uddhav Thackeray’s party member. This incident follows closely on the heels of another involving a BJP MLA shooting a leader from the Eknath Shinde faction inside an Ulhasnagar police station, prompting Chief Minister Shinde to address the recent spate of firearm-related incidents.

Abhishek Ghosalkar: Who was he?

Abhishek Ghosalkar, a 40-year-old ardent supporter of Uddhav Thackeray’s party and the son of former MLA Vinod Ghosalkar, held positions as a Mumbai Municipal Corporation corporator and served as a director at the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank. He was shot four times during the incident. It’s worth noting that Mauris Noronha, the perpetrator, used an illegal pistol to carry out the crime and subsequently shot himself once.

What caused Abhishek Ghosalkar’s death?

According to a police official, the motive behind Abhishek Ghosalkar’s death stems from “personal enmity” between him and Mauris Noronha. Strangely, the Facebook Live broadcast was intended to portray a reconciliation between the two and an end to their animosity for the betterment of the IC Colony area.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut claimed on X that Chief Minister Shinde had invited Noronha to join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena just four days before the tragic incident. Sanjay Raut also called for the resignation of Devendra Fadnavis, the home minister and deputy chief minister.

DCP Raj Tilak Roushan of the crime branch noted that on the surface, there seems to have been a rivalry between the two individuals, potentially leading to the fatal confrontation. Immediate response teams reached the scene promptly, transporting both the assailant and the victim to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. The incident is under thorough investigation, with forensic samples being collected and a FIR filed as the case is handed over to the Crime Branch, as stated by DCP Datta Nalawade.
