Uttarakhand Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat is being sought by the ED.

In recent developments, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at more than ten locations in Uttarakhand and the Delhi-NCR region. The focus of these operations was a money laundering case, with the residence of Harak Singh Rawat, a prominent leader of the Uttarakhand Congress and former minister, being among the targeted sites, as per reports from news agencies.

Early reports suggest that the ED’s searches extended to various locations in Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. The investigation is believed to be linked to alleged unlawful activities within the Corbett Tiger Reserve in the state.

Harak Singh Rawat had joined the Congress ahead of the 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections after six years of primary membership in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP secured victory in the Uttarakhand elections for the second consecutive term.

Notably, in 2016, Harak Singh Rawat, along with ten other MLAs, defected to the BJP, citing reasons such as anti-party activities against senior Congressman Harish Rawat.

The ED’s recent raid comes on the heels of searches conducted at the residences of Bibhav Kumar, the personal assistant to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and others, including Rajya Sabha MP ND Gupta, in connection with a money laundering case. Allegations revolve around bribes linked to irregularities in the Delhi Jal Board tendering process being transferred to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as election funds.

The ED, acting under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, conducted searches at twelve locations in the national capital, targeting individuals such as Bibhav Kumar, former DPJ member Shalabh Kumar, ND Gupta, chartered accountant Pankaj Mangal, and other members associated with the ruling party in Delhi.

This development follows previous ED raids on AAP leaders, including the personal assistant of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal has strongly criticized the searches, claiming they are politically motivated. The AAP alleges that the ED, in collaboration with the central government, is engaging in intimidation. The ongoing investigation centers around alleged bribes from discrepancies in the DJB tendering process being funneled as election funds to the AAP.
