In connection to the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into money laundering related to the now-canceled Delhi excise policy, Sanjay Singh, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been in custody since October. Notably, he will not be taking the oath as a Rajya Sabha MP on Monday, as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha has refused to allow him, citing information from the Privileges Committee.

Sanjay Singh, who was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on July 24 last year for defying the chair’s instructions, has been granted permission by a Delhi court on Saturday to take the oath as an MP at Rouse Avenue. The court order came two days after Singh petitioned for temporary bail to attend the current Parliament Budget Session from February 5 to 9.
Singh’s lawyer informed the court that he needed to travel to Sultanpur for a hearing in another case filed against him on February 7. The court denied the request for temporary bail but allowed him to take the oath on Monday, as the Enforcement Directorate did not object to his revised plea.
Sanjay Singh, who has been detained since October in connection with the ED’s money laundering investigation into the Delhi excise policy, was allowed to visit the returning officer on January 4 to pick up his membership certificate.
The ED is investigating alleged money laundering in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, which revolves around accusations that the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government encouraged cartelization and favored specific dealers who allegedly paid bribes. The AAP has vehemently denied these allegations.
Manish Sisodia, the former deputy chief minister of Delhi and a party colleague of Sanjay Singh, has been in custody since March last year in connection with the same case.
Anita Singh, Sanjay Singh’s wife, noted that this marks the first time an elected official has been released from prison to retake the oath as a member of parliament. She expressed gratitude to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for having faith in her husband. The case revolves around the Delhi government’s excise policy, aimed at reviving the liquor industry, and has been marred by allegations of corruption and bribery, which the AAP continues to deny.
