Nayanthara issue apology

Nayanthara acknowledged that while the film aimed to convey a positive message, it may have unintentionally caused distress. She expressed disbelief at the removal of the censored movie from an OTT platform after its theatrical release, emphasizing that the intention was never to offend Hindu emotions.

As a devout believer who regularly visits temples across the country, Nayanthara reassured her commitment to never intentionally offend spiritual sensibilities. She extended sincere apologies to those whose sentiments were affected, highlighting that the film ‘Annapoorani’ was meant to uplift and inspire, not to cause distress.

Nayanthara’s apology followed a declaration by Zee Studios.

Nayanthara’s apology followed a similar statement from Zee Studios, the movie’s co-producers, who apologized to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for hurting Hindu sentiments. Zee Studios urged co-producer Trident Arts to address the objectionable content in the film and requested Netflix to temporarily remove the movie from its OTT platform.

‘Annapoorani,’ Nayanthara’s 75th movie, was released on Netflix on December 28 but faced de-platforming on January 11. The film, produced by Trident Arts, Zee Studios, and Naad Studios, drew criticism on social media for alleged anti-Hindu content, including scenes promoting conversion to Islam.

What is the controversy?

The controversy surrounding ‘Annapoorani’ erupted following its Netflix release, leading activist Ramesh Solanki and the Hindutva organization Vishva Hindu Parishad to file a police complaint against Netflix and the filmmakers. Allegations ranged from promoting love jihad to hurting the sentiments of the Brahmin community. The complaint also contended that the film made incorrect comments about the Hindu deity Rama being a food eater.

In response to the heated controversy, Netflix globally took down the film, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. Nayanthara, in her letter, clarified that the true intention behind ‘Annapoorni’ was to uplift and inspire, not to cause distress. Drawing upon her two-decade-long journey in the film industry, she emphasized her consistent dedication to spreading positivity and fostering learning among her audience.

Another FIR was filed in Madhya Pradesh by the Hindu Seva Parishad on January 10.

In conclusion, the debate surrounding ‘Annapoorani’ continues to unfold as both lead actresses and the film’s producers issue apologies for concerns related to the portrayal of Hindu sentiments in the film.
