Airline operator fines IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India - find out why

Three major airlines in India – Indigo, SpiceJet, and Air India – have recently faced criticism and penalties from the country’s aviation regulator due to flight delays caused by dense fog in North India and reports of mistreatment of passengers. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed fines on these airlines for violating guidelines.

Aviation Regulator Fined popular airlines. 

IndiGo, a low-budget carrier, was fined a substantial amount of Rs 1.2 crore for five violations. One notable incident included passengers eating on the tarmac while waiting for their delayed flight, a violation of DGCA Air Safety Circular 04 of 2007. This circular prohibits passengers from walking on an active apron, emphasizing the importance of apron discipline for passenger and aircraft safety.

Why was Indigo fined by the aviation regulator? 

The video of this incident went viral on social media, leading to severe complaints against IndiGo. The airline has been directed to pay the penalty within 30 days, marking one of the highest fines imposed on an airline in recent times.

SpiceJet and Air India also faced fines of Rs 30 lakh each for violating fog-preparedness guidelines. The DGCA found both airlines at fault for not rostering Category-III trained pilots capable of flying in low visibility conditions. Despite recommendations issued during a meeting on November 6, 2023, both airlines failed to comply with the regulations.

Why SpiceJet and Air India get fined

The fines were imposed after reviewing flight delay, cancellation, and diversion data for December 2023. Notices were issued to SpiceJet and Air India on January 2, highlighting their non-compliance with DGCA directives. This penalty underscores the importance of adhering to standard operating procedures and safety protocols within the aviation industry.

Conclusion 

In addition to the airline fines, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) also faced a penalty of 90 lakh for not following standard operating procedures and safety protocols. These measures are crucial for maintaining the overall safety and efficiency of air travel.
