Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), announced on Monday that her party will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election independently, fielding a single candidate. While addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati clarified that her decision to go solo is rooted in the party’s historical success in forming a majority government in Uttar Pradesh in 2007 with support from various communities, including Muslims, Dalits, tribal people, and members of backward communities.

Mayawati expressed a reluctance to form pre-election alliances, citing past setbacks from such partnerships. However, she did not rule out the possibility of post-election alliances, acknowledging the interest of other political parties in collaborating with the BSP. She emphasized the party’s commitment to distance itself from those promoting communalism and caste-based politics.
The BSP leader addressed recent rumors about her departure from politics, asserting that she remains dedicated to strengthening the party. Mayawati had appointed her nephew, Akash Anand, as her ideological successor, but she clarified that this move did not signify her withdrawal from active political involvement.
In discussing the decline in the BSP’s electoral performance, Mayawati acknowledged the challenges faced in the 2022 assembly election, where the party received its lowest vote share in thirty years at 12.8%. Despite this setback, she expressed determination to work towards securing a favorable outcome for the BSP in the upcoming elections.
Mayawati also mentioned receiving an invitation to the inauguration of the Ram Temple but remained undecided about attending. She noted that the BSP welcomes the construction of both the Ram Temple and the mosque in Ayodhya, aligning with the Supreme Court’s 2019 decision on the matter.
Highlighting the party’s commitment to secularism and respect for all communities and religions, Mayawati stated that the BSP would steer clear of alliances with both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

She expressed confidence in the party’s performance if the national polls are conducted fairly and impartially. Additionally, Mayawati underscored that the BSP, under Dalit leadership, independently conducts its elections, even though it may receive votes from alliance partners without relying on their base support.
