Tuesday marked the passing of the renowned classical vocalist, Ustad Rashid Khan, who had been battling cancer for an extended period and was undergoing treatment at a Kolkata hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to Khan’s family and friends, acknowledging the void left by the legendary musician’s departure. Modi described Khan as a “legendary figure” whose unparalleled talent and dedication to music enriched India’s cultural world and inspired generations. President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences, recognizing Khan’s “rich legacy.”

Ustad Rashid Khan’s health had deteriorated after a stroke last month, leading to his treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital. Despite initial treatment in Mumbai, he chose to stay in Kolkata for the duration of his care. Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Khan received early musical education from his uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan and later studied under Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Rashid made his concert debut at the age of eleven and continued to impress audiences with his talent.
