On Wednesday, the Manipur government rejected the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s proposal for the 66-day Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, citing the current state of affairs in the state. The Congress party had submitted an application on January 2, seeking permission to launch the Nyay Yatra on January 14 from the Imphal East district’s Hatta Kangjeibung ground. However, the government denied permission, stating concerns about klaw and order.

Despite the silent response from the nation, a group of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) members, led by President K Meghachandra Singh, met Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday. The Chief Minister maintained his decision to decline permission for the rally scheduled on January 14, citing the prevailing law and order situation.
Expressing disappointment, the Congress president criticized the government’s response, calling it a “murder of democracy” and a violation of people’s rights, especially in Manipur. In response, Meghachandra Singh announced that the Congress party would organize the rally at a private venue in Khongjom, Thoubal district, emphasizing that the Nyay Yatra is a program for the people.
Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, scheduled to commence in Mumbai on March 20, covering 14 states and 85 districts, aims to cover 6,713 kilometers through a combination of foot marches and bus rides. AICC president Mallikarjun Kharghe is set to flag off the rally, with the intention of highlighting the socio-political significance of the initiative.
Meghachandra Singh urged Chief Minister Biren Singh to prioritize peace in Manipur over party politics, emphasizing the rally’s role in restoring peace. When questioned about granting permission for Rahul Gandhi’s rally, Biren Singh stated that it is under consideration, with reviews from various security agencies influencing the final decision.
Aim behind the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra
Congress’s general secretary, KC Venugopal, revealed that the Manipur government has sought approval from the Centre. The national president, Mallikarjun Kharge, is scheduled to inaugurate the program, with the participation of chief ministers from Congress-ruled states and other prominent party leaders.
