The CEO of a Bengaluru-based AI start-up, Suchita Seth, was apprehended on Monday as she attempted to flee in a taxi after allegedly murdering her four-year-old son at a hotel in Goa and concealing his body in a bag. The Karnataka Police detained the 39-year-old woman in Chitradurga. Seth had checked into the Sinquerim hotel in North Goa on January 6 with her son.

Hotel staff discovered bloodstains on the sheets while cleaning the room after Seth had checked out, prompting the management to contact the police. According to the police, Seth used a sharp weapon to kill her son and then asked the hotel to arrange a taxi for her return to Bengaluru, claiming a preference for road travel. CCTV footage revealed that she left the hotel alone, contradicting her initial account of leaving her son with a relative in South Goa.

Sucheta Seth, the CEO of Mindful AI Lab, was taken into custody by Goa Police from Chitradurga, Karnataka. The motive behind the killing remains unknown. Sucheta Seth, recognized as one of the “100 Excellent Women in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for 2021,” holds the position of CEO at the start-up Mindful AI Lab, as indicated on her LinkedIn profile.

Described as a data scientist and AI ethics expert with over 12 years of experience leading data science teams and scaling machine learning solutions, Seth has held research fellowships at prestigious institutions such as the Raman Research Institute, the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University, and served as a Mozilla Fellow at Data & Society. Her expertise includes patents in natural language processing.

Sucheta Seth, originally from West Bengal and currently residing in Bengaluru, informed the apartment staff in Candolim on January 6 that she needed to travel to Bengaluru for work, requesting assistance in arranging a taxi .

However, after Seth left the apartment, staff discovered bloodstains and noticed her son was missing. Seth explained the bloodstains as a result of her monthly periods and claimed her son was with a friend in South Goa, providing a fake address. The police notified her husband, Venkat Raman, currently in Jakarta, about the incident. The investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the tragic incident.
