The foreign ministers of India and Nepal have officially launched additional reconstruction initiatives in Nepal, responding to the earthquakes in 2015 and 2023.
The initiatives encompass cultural heritage projects, thirty-two health initiatives, and twenty-five schools. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced a financial assistance package of 1,000 crores (approximately $75 million) from India to aid in the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by the November 2017 earthquake in western Nepal.

During a meeting, Jaishankar, along with his Nepalese counterpart NP Saud, shared details about the reconstruction assistance package for areas affected by the earthquake in Jajarkot. They also jointly inaugurated the new central library at Tribhuvan University. Jaishankar had earlier informed Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal about India’s commitment to providing financial support. He expressed India’s dedication to supporting the people of Nepal and working collaboratively with the country’s leadership in these efforts.
The reconstruction initiatives initiated in the aftermath of the 2015 and 2023 earthquakes include cultural heritage projects, thirty-two health initiatives, and twenty-five schools. Nepal’s top priorities following the earthquakes were housing, education, health, and cultural heritage rehabilitation. India has pledged $1 billion to support these endeavors, comprising a $250 million grant and a $750 million credit line. By November 2021, all 71 rebuilding projects in the education sector, supported by grants, had been completed.
Jaishankar highlighted the swift response of India in providing emergency aid within 48 hours of the November 2017 earthquake, including the delivery of prefabricated homes and essential supplies. The partnership between India and Nepal has expanded in physical, digital, and energy connectivity. India’s support for Nepal’s education system, including scholarships and capacity-building initiatives, aims to empower more children.
Jaishankar assured continued support, emphasizing the values of “sbka sath, sbka viaks, sbka vishwas, and sbka pryas” to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. The collaboration focuses on India’s development journey and aims to redefine connections with neighboring partners, particularly Nepal.

NP Saud acknowledged India’s significant financial assistance, particularly for post-quake rehabilitation efforts, and highlighted the enduring ties between the two nations in culture, history, and humanity across various sectors like transportation infrastructure, hydropower, health science, and energy connectivity through a petroleum pipeline.
