Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has granted permission to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP leader Sanjay Singh, currently incarcerated, to sign essential documents for his renomination in the Rajya Sabha. Singh’s current term as a member of the Rajya Sabha is set to conclude on 27 January, and the Returning Officer has issued a notice for the conduct of elections and nominations by 9 January.

The order, issued by Special Judge MK Nagpal, comes in response to an application filed by Singh, who sought permission to sign crucial documents necessary for his renomination. Singh, currently in Tihar Jail, received approval from the jail superintendent to sign the documents. The court acknowledged the presence of filed documents with the authorities seeking approval for Singh’s renomination and authorized the accused to be escorted for the purpose. Additionally, Singh is permitted to consult with his counsel for half an hour to discuss the modalities related to the nomination filing.
When is Sanjay Singh arrested?
It is noteworthy that Singh was arrested by the anti-money laundering agency on 4 October. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges his involvement in the formulation and execution of a now-discarded excise policy that allegedly favored certain liquor entities financially. Singh has refuted these claims.
Special Judge M K Nagpal expressed a prima facie view, asserting the evidence indicates Singh’s direct or indirect involvement in the money laundering associated with the scheduled offenses.
The court, in dismissing Singh’s bail application, AAP emphasized that the conditions outlined in Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for bail were not met. The court further noted that the Supreme Court had acknowledged the payment of bribes related to the Delhi excise policy process.
