In the opening week of January 2024, Y.S. Sharmila the president of the YSR Telangana Party, is anticipated to merge her party with the Congress. Inside sources from the Congress suggest that Sharmila is likely to be appointed to a significant role within the party’s central leadership, focusing on active involvement in the state assembly of Andhra Pradesh and the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in early 2024. Should this merger occur, a member of the YSR family will contend against the YSRC, led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The political journey traces back to 2009 when, following the demise of former Chief Minister YS Rajashekhar Reddy, his son Jagan established a political party. At that time, YSR’s wife Vijyamma and daughter Sharmila aligned with Jagan. Negotiations for the merger with the Congress, which were temporarily halted due to the Telangana assembly elections, are expected to resume in the third week of December, according to party insiders. It is reported that Sharmila has agreed to assume the role of general secretary in the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and would also be entrusted with overseeing a northern state.
In the 2024 general elections,Y.S. Sharmila is poised to run for a Congress seat in Andhra Pradesh. Two election meetings have been scheduled for her—one in Visakhapatnam and another in Vijayawada. Accompanying her would be Rahul Gandhi in Vijayawada and Priyanka Vadra in Visakhapatnam. However, Sharmila has not confirmed her participation in another meeting in Rayalaseema.
According to sources, Y.S. Sharmila expressed her reluctance to jeopardize her brother Jagan’s support in the Rayalaseema region. Talks are ongoing regarding her potential nomination to the Rajya Sabha from neighboring Karnataka, although she remains undecided about contesting direct elections for a parliamentary seat.

During discussions with Congress, Sharmila emphasized her commitment to preserving the unity of the pro-Congress vote, citing this as the reason for her decision not to run in the Telangana assembly elections. She declared that, in light of revelations about corruption and misrule, groups sharing similar goals should collaborate for the benefit of the people of Telangana.
