Ujjain meridian change: Mohan Yadav Will change world time, says Congress chief minister

Mohan Yadav, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, recently asserted that India set the world standard time 300 years ago and advocated for a shift in the global prime meridian from Greenwich to Ujjain. According to Yadav, the instrument used to set India’s time 300 years ago is still available in Ujjain.

CM Shift to make Ujjain a global prime meridian

During a session in the state assembly, Yadav criticized the adoption of western standards, stating that India’s time was established centuries ago, but later, Paris and the British, considering Greenwich as the Prime Meridian, took over the time-setting process.

Yadav questioned the conventional practice of starting a new day at midnight, suggesting that people typically begin their day at sunrise or shortly afterward. He expressed the government’s commitment to positioning Ujjain as the global Prime Meridian and asserted that efforts were underway to correct the world’s time.

Ujjain was India’s central meridian

Historically, Ujjain held significance in Hindu astronomical beliefs as India’s central meridian, determining the country’s time zones and differences. The city also played a role in the Hindu calendar’s timekeeping. Yadav outlined a cultural revival roadmap for spiritual locations in the state, ranging from Mahakal Lok in Ujjain to Orchha, Salkanpur, and Maihar.

Orchha, known for the Shri Ram Raja temple where Lord Ram is worshipped as both a God and a king, along with Salkanpur and Maihar associated with goddess Sharda Devi, are part of the proposed plan for cultural rejuvenation.

In a bold move, Yadav aims to shift the world’s time standard from Greenwich to Ujjain, emphasizing the city’s historical significance. He highlighted the diverse work schedules worldwide, prompting the question of who starts work in the dark. The Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), currently the global time standard, is measured at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London.
