In a recent government announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet gave its approval on December 15 to the proposal aimed at transforming Surat Airport into an international airport. Local authorities in Surat anticipate that this development will play a pivotal role in facilitating the export activities of the city’s flourishing diamond and textile industries while also positioning the airport as a central hub for international passengers. The elevation of Surat Airport to international status is deemed crucial for bolstering economic growth, attracting foreign investment, and strengthening diplomatic relations. The official statement indicates that the airport’s international designation is expected to significantly contribute to the expansion of the surrounding region by fostering increased passenger and cargo activities.
Renaming Surat Airport:
There is a potential consideration for renaming the airport in honor of Morarji Desai, a former prime minister and resident of Valsad. Desai, who served as an elected lawmaker from the Surat Lok Sabha constituency from 1957 to 1980, has been proposed as a fitting namesake for the airport. The idea was initially suggested by Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in a 2014 letter to Prime Minister Modi, and later reiterated in a 2020 letter from Surat-based Legislative Subramanian Swamy.

Air India International Connection:
According to a report from the Times of India, Air India Express is set to commence daily flights from Surat to Dubai. The flights are scheduled to depart early in the morning, reach Dubai by 9 o’clock, and return by 1 o’clock. Rupesh Kumar, the head of Surat Airport, reportedly denied awareness of the matter when questioned by News18. The inaugural flight, slated for December 17th, is expected to benefit merchants on both ends, with ticket prices starting at Rs 24,000.
Prime Minister Modi has also announced a significant investment of 3,500 crore rupees for the establishment of the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) in Khajodi, near Surat. The diamond trading community in Surat, representing 92% of the world’s raw diamonds, has advocated for increased flights to Dubai, prompting a response from Air India Express. This move aligns with the city’s efforts to boost the diamond trade, with the new diamond exchange being a result of the city’s prominence in diamond trading.
Surat Airport’s role extends beyond supporting the diamond and textile industries; it is poised to become a crucial transit hub for global visitors. This ambitious initiative has the potential to drive substantial economic development, solidify Surat’s position in the international aviation sector, and usher in a golden era for the entire region.
