The operation involves the creation of fraudulent documents and the presentation of staged family pictures to portray donors as relatives of patients. This deceptive practice allows strangers to sell their kidneys for monetary compensation.

How do patients get donors?

According to the investigation, individuals unrelated to the patients are being registered as family members in official documents, facilitating the illegal kidney trade. A 27-year-old Burmese man, interviewed during the investigation, claimed to be selling his kidney due to the financial struggles of his elderly parents. Allegedly, patients at Apollo Hospital can select a donor and provide them with cash after receiving a kidney.

Money is needed to source the kidney.

The investigation further exposes the financial aspects of the alleged racket, with the Apollo Myanmar operation head disclosing a detailed cost document. This document outlines the expenses associated with kidney transplants, ranging from Rs 33,000 for the creation of a family tree to Rs 21,000 for flights and Rs 16,700 for medical board registration. The total estimated costs, excluding payments to donors, may reach up to Rs 1,79,500, amounting to 70 to 80 lakh.

How is the Cash for Kidney racket system planned?

The modus operandi of the Cash for Kidney racket involves patients making upfront cash payments, after which donors travel to India. Both the patient and donor undergo an interview with the transplant committee, responsible for scrutinizing their documents and approving the transplant process. Shockingly, an Apollo Hospital agent from Myanmar revealed to a reporter that the committee includes various officials of Apollo Hospitals allegedly orchestrating this illicit operation.
