World Hindu Congress Embraces Hindutva and Hindu Dharma, Renouncing Hinduism

In a formal statement, the third World Hindu Congress (WHC) has opted to discontinue the use of the term Hinduism, asserting that the term Hindutva is a more accurate representation, encompassing all that the word ‘Hindu’ implies. Designating Hindutva and Hindu Dharma as the “eternal” religion, the World Hindu Congress chose these terms on Friday to replace Hinduism, which it argued conveyed oppressive and discriminatory sentiments.

The first element in the term ‘Hindu Dharma,’ namely ‘Hindu,’ is a widely employed term that encapsulates everything Sanatan, or eternal. The WHC adopted a resolution at the conclusion of its inaugural day of deliberations, stating, “there is Dharma, referring to ‘That, which preserves’.” In contrast, it was asserted that Hinduism is fundamentally distinct due to its “ism” suffix, which implies a word for a restrictive and biased mentality or belief.

For these reasons, many elders prefer the term “Hindutva” over Hinduism, deeming it more precise as it encompasses the entire spectrum of what the word “Hindu” signifies.

The declaration’s pronouncement arose in the midst of controversy sparked by contentious remarks made by DMK managers regarding Sanatan Dharma during a conference themed “The Abolition of Sanatana.” The statement clarified that Hindutva is a straightforward term signifying “Hindu-ness.” It highlighted the alternative term “Sanatan Dharma,” often abbreviated as “Sanatan,” where “Sanatan” functions as an adjective signifying the eternal nature of Hindu Dharma.

The release also noted that, due to inexperience, many academics and scholars erroneously depict Hindutva as the antithesis of Hindu Dharma. However, it emphasized that most of these individuals harbor anti-Hindutva sentiments driven by deep-seated animosity and prejudices against Hindu Dharma. The WHC condemned these attacks and called on Hindus worldwide to unite against those who propagate such hatred and prevail.

In an earlier statement, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat proclaimed that India would illuminate the path to joy and fulfillment for the rest of the world, grappling with challenges stemming from consumerism, socialism, and capitalism.

He urged Hindus globally to foster connections with others and extend a helping hand, stating, “We have to reach out to every Hindu.” Bhagwat emphasized that the shared ethnicity of Hindus could serve as a unifying force worldwide.
