This incident has ignited widespread debates and controversies concerning the prevailing culture of harassment on social media platforms. Many internet users have rallied behind the players, condemning the release of the University of Wisconsin volleyball team’s pictures and emphasizing the importance of obtaining the players’ consent before sharing any photographs. Some social media users have implored others not to further circulate these private images.
The student-athletes of the University of Wisconsin made a statement, acknowledging that private photos and videos of UW volleyball student-athletes, which were never meant to be made public, have been digitally circulated. They strongly condemned this unauthorized sharing, considering it a grave invasion of the student-athletes’ privacy, potentially violating university policies and criminal laws.
The UW report also noted that as soon as the volleyball team learned of the pictures being shared on social media, team members promptly contacted the university police to file a report.
The investigation by UWPD is centered on multiple crimes, including the non-consensual sharing of sensitive photos. It is important to note that UWPD is not investigating the volleyball student-athletes for any wrongdoing in this matter. Their primary focus is on providing support to the student-athletes, offering them the necessary services and resources, as stated in the report shared by UW athletes.
